Asian flavours - VIETNAMESE SALAD

0 komentar
Other than the dipping sauce, this dish can be made entirely with Saskatchewan-based ingredients. (Adapted from Cooking Light)

Vietnamese Salad
1/2 of a 450-gram box angel hair pasta
Dipping sauce (see below)
1/2 cup carrots, cut in thin matchsticks
1/2 cup cucumber, seeds removed, cut in thin matchsticks
1/2 cup cabbage, thinly sliced (optional)
1 pound pork or beef, or a combination
1/4 cup green onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp cilantro, finely chopped
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp fish sauce
2 handfuls of lettuce
Fresh cilantro and mint for garnish, chopped

Cook pasta in salted water. Drain, rinse and cool. Meanwhile, make the dipping sauce (see below).

Boil two cups of water with a dash of salt. Cooking each separately, boil the carrots, cucumber and cabbage just until they start to soften. Remove with a slotted spoon and rinse in cold water. Add vegetables to the bowl of dipping sauce.

Mix together the ground meat, green onion, cilantro, sugar and fish sauce. Add a dash of salt and pepper. Form into ten patties. Cook patties on a grill or skillet until nicely browned and cooked through. Add the warm patties to the dipping sauce and vegetables.

To serve, place the noodles on a platter. Circle with lettuce. Scoop vegetables and meat patties on top. Pour on dipping sauce. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro and mint.

Dipping Sauce – Mix together:
1 large garlic, minced
1 hot pepper, chopped
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup fish sauce
1/2 cup red-wine vinegar

Saskatoon berry time

0 komentar
The saskatoon berries are awesome this year! They're so sweet, even my non-Saskatchewan husband likes them! (He thinks saskatoon berries are an acquired taste, but I think it's genetic.) Here we are after a couple hours picking berries at the old O'Hara homestead on the South Saskatchewan River. I plan to can a whole bunch of berries to eat on my morning muesli all through the winter.

Does your hairstyle fit?

0 komentar
We go to the store and try on clothes to make sure they fit and look good on us. Why shouldn't you do the same for your hair?

I remember when I was young that I wanted to cut bangs at one point. So, I would take my hair and pin most of it up, leaving the ends across my forehead so I could see what bangs would look like. I used to do the same for trying out shorter hair.

Now there is a very easy way to try on different hair styles and you don't even have to be near a mirror. It is called hair imaging software and it has come a long way over the last few years to make it very easy and quick to find and try on hair styles.

Most programs let you upload a recent picture of yourself. Then you can browse through the extensive galleries and experiment with literally hundreds of different hair styles. Thinking of changing your hair color? No problem, there are many different color options for you to try out.

So what are you waiting for, come and check out these free demos on trying on your hairstyle to make sure it fits. Hairstyles demo

Newspaper Column - POTATO BELLS

0 komentar
Published in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, 21 July 2008.

The United Nations has declared 2008 the Year of the Potato, so it is appropriate that we pay homage to this humble tuber which grows so well on the prairie. In fact, potatoes are the only vegetable grown in Saskatchewan in sufficient quantities to meet local demand. In other words, we are potato self-sufficient. (Excluding potatoes, we import about 97% of all vegetables sold in local grocery stores.)

Saskatchewan farmers also produce seed potatoes which, thanks to an unexplained phenomenon called “northern vigor” are in demand by potato farmers south of the border. Northern vigor means the plants grow faster and produce more potatoes than seed potatoes from warmer climates. (This may be due to the longer days, cooler nights or colder winters on the prairies, but nobody quite knows for sure. Research is ongoing.)

The United Nations chose to celebrate the potato because of its growing popularity around the world, especially in developing countries where the potato has great potential for alleviating the hunger caused by higher prices for wheat, corn and rice. Potatoes are also part of the U.N.’s mandate to improve the lives of women in poorer countries where farming and marketing is often women’s work, so if more potatoes are consumed, women and their children will benefit.

In my family, the potato patch was my dad’s project. As children, we helped to plant and harvest 400 hills of potatoes, and later when the harvest was in the cold room, we kept the potatoes “sprouted” through the winter months. We ate a lot of potatoes when I was growing up. When I got my own home, dad kept me supplied with potatoes until a couple of years ago when he retired from the farm. Now I grow my own. My plot at the City Park Community Garden is stuffed full of fingerling potatoes, which are long and yellow and never need to be peeled.

The potato has an interesting history. It originated in the Andes Mountains of South America, where it was a staple and sacred food of the Incas. The farmers of Peru still grow 2,800 different varieties of potatoes. Spanish explorers took the potato back to Europe in the 1500s, where it was not quite as popular as South American gold—many people thought potatoes were poisonous and could cause a whole host of diseases such as leprosy.

Because potatoes were so easy to cultivate and produced so much food for so little effort (as compared, say, to wheat) it was believed that anyone who grew them would become chronically lazy. Suspicious farmers refused to plant them, let alone eat them. It wasn’t until the kings and queens of Europe began touting the pleasures of potatoes (and growing them in the royal gardens) that the rest of the population caught on. Potatoes have seen their dark days. In the mid-1800s in Ireland, potato crops were destroyed by a blight, causing widespread starvation and prompting many people to leave Ireland for greener pastures in North America.

Europeans eat more potatoes per capita than anyone else. North Americans come second (much of that as French fries), but the largest producer of potatoes is now China, attesting to the potato’s potential for feeding the growing populations of the world.

Potatoes are very good for you. Eaten with dairy products, they provide almost all the elements of a healthy diet. Most world cuisines include potatoes from perogies to curries to gratins, even, according to the UN website, potato-based desserts. Personally, I like potatoes any which way but mashed. Now that delicious baby potatoes are at the farmers’ markets—and a garden near you—it is a perfect time to celebrate the International Year of the Potato.

Potato Bells
Peel and wash one large potato per person. Using a melon baller, scoop out half-circle “bells” of raw potato. Cook the “bells” in salted boiling water just until tender. Drain. Smother the warm potatoes in melted butter. Fry in a hot skillet until the potatoes are golden brown.

Hair Styling Tips

0 komentar
Always use a protecting spray when blow drying your hair, this helps from damaging your hair. Then do a few more quick spray of the protector before straightening it. To really get a good hold use an extreme hold hair spray.

Colors are always a good way to make an emo style stand out. For those who can't color their hair, pick up some non-permanent hair color. It is temporary and will wash right out. You can find them in sprays and gels. All colors too- red, black, purple, blue, pink, green, teal, yellow, aqua, etc. You can always use more than one color!

The cut says it all. Short or long- it doesn't matter. Cut or have your hair cut in choppy, uneven layers. Side bangs are the bomb! Throwing some color in them will def. draw some attention. Using a razor will give you more texture- which is a great thing with emo hair.

If your hair is thick and you want it thinner to style better- use or have your stylist use a thinning sheer- this while thin out your hair (but not too much) and also give you texture.

thanks to Crystal

Simple Steps in Fighting Excessive Hairfall

0 komentar
Having excessive falling hair is a condition that is commonly shared by a lot of people. Many factors contribute to this, such as stress and tension, poor diet and malnutrition, hormonal imbalance, over-processing of the hair, and frequent use of styling products and chemicals, to name a few. Just because it is a common condition does not mean that it should be ignored and left untreated. If you allow the condition to persist, you might find yourself dealing with bigger problems in the future, such as hair loss and baldness. If you suffer from excessive hair fall, here are some simple steps to follow in order to arrest the problem.

Reassess your diet and eating habits. Make sure that you are providing your body with the right amount of vitamins and nutrients. Eat a lot of food rich in protein and Vitamins B and E, as these promote the growth of healthy and lustrous hair.

Avoid combing or brushing your hair when it is wet and refrain from putting it up on a ponytail or a tight bun. Hair is at its weakest when wet and brushing or combing it makes it prone to splitting and breakage. Fixing your hair up in a very tight hairstyle may also cause unnecessary damage to the hair follicles and may result to hair loss.

Lastly, always keep your scalp clean and free of dirt or product buildup. Wash it on a daily basis to get rid of dirt, grime, excess sebum, and styling product buildup. Massage it every so often to aid in the circulation of blood to the scalp. This allows the scalp and the hair follicles to breathe and to stimulate the growth and production of healthy hair.

Gang Gang Dance x 5

ME : I'm tired and my stomach hurts. I really want to read but work was terrible, and I don't think my brain is functioning enough to successfully interpret intelligent thought typed on pieces of paper bound together.

YOU : Fuck you, Justin, post some sweet music.

ME : Ok

Gang Gang Dance is basically the shit. If you were in Alice In Wonderland, climbing a steep spiraling staircase into an astral projection of the guts of fireworks, you'd be at the heart of their sound. If you are a fan of groups like Excepter, well, you probably are already a fan. I don't know, though. GGD is superior to Excepter in my humble opinion. Like surfing the crest of a mystical wave. Hyperbole is THE BEST.

I hope yr happy.

Eating locally pays

0 komentar
Reported in the Boston Globe, the American public radio program The Splendid Table is doing a one-year study on eating sustainably. It asked 14 participants across the country to keep track of what they spend on a local food diet -- 80 percent of their food items are from organic, regional sources within 500 miles of their homes. Seven out of 14 participants reported spending less on food. Five said they spent the same as usual. (Which, according to the Globe, might be less anyway given the rise in food prices.) The fate of the other two participants wasn't reported.

I reckon I spend way less on food by eating locally, simply because I'm buying almost no processed or exotic foods, which usually cost more. I often buy in bulk (lentils, beans), direct from the farmer (eggs, beef), when it's in season, abundant and less expensive (strawberries, asparagus) and harvest my own small garden (herbs, tomatoes). It's a little more work, but it saves a few bucks!

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue (1977/2008)

0 komentar
This is the one I'm excited to bring to you. Shit I love the Beach Boys. I found some bootleg of the o.g. version of Smile on vinyl the other day, then this was re-issued, with way awesome extras. So Dennis was the drummer, the surfer, the player, the alcoholic, who very few thought any anything other than those qualities in him. Little did they know he would churn out on of the best post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys albums in their cannon. Dennis, who was also the member that was hanging out with Charles Manson for a short period before the Tate murder (and ripped off one of Manson's songs for 20/20, "Never Learn Not to Love", which is also known as "Cease To Exist"), was never classically trained on a piano, rather felt his way around, composing songs. This is the result. It's amazing; somewhere between Smiley Smile, White Album-era Beatles, Bee Gee's first record, a fusion of late 70's CTI and ECM jazz/pop records, with a small dash of Dark Side Of The Moon (you will undoubtedly say I misdiagnosed it, but whatever). Get it, listen. The second disc is chalk full of outtakes from his would-be second album, Bambu (not Bamboo).

Jeremy Enigk - Return Of The Frog Queen (1996)

Dude from Sunny Day Real Estate. This is from, iirc, a period in his life where he locked himself in a room for like a year or something to meditate or pray and try to figure stuff out. Supposedly it's about God, but in that underlying way which many artists choose to express themselves on that matter. His singing style travels from gentle to screeching - not in a super-emo (though partly emo) way, rather very melodic, with swift tempo changes over something between plain acoustic and Jon Brion-esque production. My guy at the record store considers this a top 3 all time album. 320 bit rate.

Le Tigre x3

Someone asked for more Le Tigre, and how could I refuse? Basically it's lo-fi-pseudo-dance music for feminists. They used drum machines, guitars, and synths, I think. They peaked on their self-titled debut, and everything else was good, but not great. They quickly defused, as the main singer chick could never keep a band going for very long.

Baby's on fire, better throw her in the water. This is almost pre-shoegaze post-punk or something. Good campfire ghost-story music, but no Cub Scouts, just you and a gang of the midgets from Dylan's "Ballad Of A Thin Man." That may be over-exaggerating, but not by much.

Pit Er Pat - Emergency (2004)

I posted about Pit Er Pat's last album, Pyramids, a while ago. I LOVED that ish. So frighteningly calm. Come to find out they had albums before Pyramids. This is one of those, a song EP that stands abrasively different than said album. It's like Pyramids meets Pretty Girls Make Graves meets acid jazz? It's real good when it gets slow, which is rare here, and when it's fast it's just kind of bizarre, with little vocals. If that piques yr interest, go for it. It's the same band, though. Trust me.

Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night (1997)

This is some smooth shit here, mang. Hard to really pin it down other than a super galactical, smoothed-out, coked-up version of "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx" if Rae and Ghost were only describing the celebrations between drug deals. Their flows/voices are similar to Clipse, really, but the listener is left guessing about which they are talking, more often than not. But it sounds good. Interesting note about this is that, if you cross-reference this with Jay-Z's debut, Reasonable Doubt, you will hear a similarity in sound. Reason being is that Hov actually stole a few beats that were meant for this, overpaid the producers, then put them on his record, launching a "hundred-million dollar" career.

Le Tigre - Remix (2001)

This is a cd that I stumbled upon during a trip to Reckless Records a couple years back or so. It was on Le Tigre's original label, and, iirc, this is one that hasn't been reissued since they changed distributors. I'm a big fan of these gals (plus maybe dude), and while this is only a remix EP - and a kitchy one at that - it plays a nice role in their discography. A DFA remix of Deceptacon is among the 6 songs here.

i posted something a couple months back about accepting demos for artists that think they can keep up with the type of material i believe in enough to post at this hurr goldenhymn blog, and that, if they did in fact live up to, or at least have the potential of these acts, i would post a link to yr music to be downloaded and give more exposure to the people in the underground doing their little thug thizzle.

gutz, are you tough enough?

email me : somanywheelchairs(at)gmail(dot)com

if you have emailed me in the past (there were many of you, some of whom i got a chance to respond to), i will be going back through a good portion of yr work soon. my hope is to feature one artist/group per time on a designated day each week. DO NOT put a link or tell me of yr interest in a comment to this post. if you aren't an artist and think it's a cool idea, or have a funny phrase you think i should name the section, please, feel free to comment here. IF YOU ARE AN ARTIST and don't email me directly you are an idiot and automatically disqualified because you didn't pay attention past the first paragraph. sorry to be a dick, but really, i'm not being a dick. :)

Okay - High Road / Low Road (2004)

0 komentar

Okay has the album-of-the-so-far-year with Huggable Dust, and these (this?) are his other two albums, which is more like a double album. Some people get annoyed by his voice, which sounds somewhere between the soft-coo of Will Oldham and the high pitch nasal tone of B-Real of Cypress Hill. Personally, I think it's pretty bitchin'. The music is largely acoustic, with lyrics that remind me of Person Pitch. So, yeah, people that liked Panda Bear's last two albums will like him, if not you probably won't (though I won't completely write off yr bad taste). Interesting fact is that Okay (Marty Anderson in real life) is bed stricken with Chrones (sp) disease, which also effects Why?. Had no idea that disease was so serious. :(

DJ Screw - Codiene Fiend (1995)

This is the guy, from Houston, that started the 'chopped and screwed' slowed-down-for-syzzurp-drinkers remixes that is wildly popular. Purple drank is Codeine and some other crap that's basically drinkable liquid heroin. This is the only mix of his I've found, and it's just an interesting mixtape of many of the best songs from '95, including 'All I Need' by Method Man, the good version of 'One More Chance' by BIG, and many others. I guess yr supposed to get fucked the fuck up and listen to this, but it's relevant either way.

Nas - Untitled (2008)

0 komentar
Hey, Nas... stop ripping me off! Seriously, my homie and I did a song once called 'Kill Yr Television.' It was pretty good. Nas did a song called 'Sly Fox,' and it's basically the same thing. I had a phrase that said something about 'start to think outside the idiot box/ five big bad wolves got the cinema locked...' to which Nas says something about 'locked by the idiot box.' Am I stretching? Nah. The beat trudges along like the one on our song too. Not sure if it's still up on our myspace page or not, but if not, I'll probably have to upload it.

Anyhow, I'm proud of Nas, 'Sly Fox' notwithstanding. This, not Stillmatic, is his best work since that classic debut so long ago. He is ALWAYS better when he gets political, and that's what we have here. He is working with more commercially viable producers also, which may sound like a bad combo, but Nas' weakness was always choosing beats that fit his style (post Illmatic of course). He did well here.

I genuinely liked CSS' first album, that Diplo-found drenched neo-synth-disco. The girl singer is neither a good songwriter (though a few are, i guess, interesting), nor singer, but she has that intangible spunk. Haven't spent deep listening with the new one, but from a distance it made me want to dance. But it's okay not to dance, too. But it's not okay to not have fun!
