High Plains High Praise

Prairie Feast has been shortlisted in two categories of the High Plains Book Awards recognizing books about life on the great plains of North America. Not many Canadian books are nominated, so I'm thrilled to be recognized by our American counterparts. The awards ceremony is October 15 in Billings, Montana. I always love an excuse to go to Montana...

Lunch on the Radio

Guess who came for lunch today? CBC Radio host Shelagh Rogers and three Saskatchewan authors: Allan Casey, Jo-Ann Episkenew and Diane Warren. That's me on the right, beside Shelagh.

We were taping a one-hour episode of The Next Chapter focusing on award-winning writers from Saskatchewan. After our interviews, we all sat down to dinner: asparagus quiche (pictured), salad greens (including a few baby weeds) with fiddleheads, burbot fish cakes with Sue's Zucchini Relish tartar sauce, Saskatchewan chickpea hummus, bread from Christie's Bakery and rhubarb berry crisp for dessert with a choice of my homemade cherry gelato and maple ice cream.

The program airs June 27 and July 2 on CBC Radio One.

Prairie Feast Book Review

Author Shelley Leedahl had nice things to say about my book. Read the full review online.

“Prairie Feast: a writer’s journey home for dinner” is a literary, culinary, and, dare I say a cultural tour de force... I ate up her every word.

Another lovely review was published in the Edmonton Journal. Read it, too!

Manitoba Culinary Institute

My book Prairie Feast and I had an engagement this past week at the Manitoba Culinary Institute in Brandon (as part of the Winnipeg ThinAir Literary Festival). What a lovely place!

The students cooked a delicious local lunch featuring preserves and chutneys they made with produce from the gardens at the former mental health hospital. We ate in the dining room of the nurses' residence, a beautiful heritage building that houses the culinary school. A feast for the eyes...
